The predecessor of the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering was the Department of Chemical Engineering of Zhejiang University. Founded in 1927, it was the first chemical engineering department established in China by Professor Li Shouheng, a pioneer in chemical education. The Institute of Industrial Ecology and Environment under the College of Chemical and Biological Engineering has developed plasma sonar. The new technology of plasma source has been applied in the East China Sea, South China Sea, Arctic and Antarctic under support by national and also applied in geological and hydrate exploration such as ports, and has completed more than 50,000 kilometers of exploration research.
