Unmanned Production Buoy Ltd is a Scottish technology company established in 2009 to build, own and operate unmanned offshore production systems. UPB Ltd has built a concept design for an unmanned production buoy (UPB) for the offshore hydrocarbon industry. The UPB will address an industry wide problem, particularly in more mature offshore provinces, where significant hydrocarbon resources are trapped due to the lack of an economic method of extraction. The UPB is an unmanned offshore oil production system with storage and off-take systems suitable for water depths between 70m and 600m. The system allows marginal assets and re-entry into fields to become economically viable, with production rates of 500 to 15,000 bopd. The UPB enables marginal and stranded oil assets to be economically produced therefore allowing operators to maximize value from existing fields. Where conventional existing offshore production methods such as FPSOs are uneconomic, or the risks of tiebacks are not sufficiently defined, the UPB provides certainty, cash flow and production shortly after a drill rig leaves a well.
